Compare LaCie 2big RAID and 2big Dock 48TB RAID arrays: USB-C vs Thunderbolt 3, dock features, and which suits your workflow.
Quick Answer
Choose the LaCie 2big Dock v2 if you need Thunderbolt 3 speed and a built-in dock to streamline your desk. Choose the LaCie 2big RAID if USB-C connectivity and a lower price are your priorities.
Connectivity: Thunderbolt 3 vs USB-C
The biggest difference between these two 48TB RAID arrays is how they connect to your computer. The LaCie 2big Dock v2 uses Thunderbolt 3, which offers very high bandwidth and is ideal for large video files and demanding creative workloads. The LaCie 2big RAID uses USB-C, which is more universally compatible with modern laptops and desktops but may not deliver the same raw throughput in sustained heavy transfers.
Consider your existing setup: if you already use Thunderbolt 3 devices or work with 8K video, the Dock's connection is a clear advantage. If you need to plug into a wider range of machines, USB-C is the safer bet.
The Dock Factor
The 2big Dock v2 isn't just storage—it functions as a Thunderbolt 3 docking station. This means you can connect peripherals like monitors, keyboards, and other devices through the drive, reducing cable clutter and simplifying your workspace. The 2big RAID is a straightforward storage device without these extra ports.
If you value a tidy desk and want to minimize the number of hubs, the Dock's convenience is a strong selling point. If you already own a separate dock or don't need the extra ports, you can save money with the 2big RAID.
Price and Value
The LaCie 2big RAID is priced lower than the 2big Dock v2, making it an attractive option if your budget is tight. The Dock's higher price reflects the added Thunderbolt 3 controller and docking functionality. For many users, the extra cost is justified by the performance and convenience, but it's not essential for every workflow.
Trade-Offs at a Glance
- Speed vs. Compatibility: If you need maximum transfer speed and work with Thunderbolt 3 devices, the 2big Dock v2 is the better choice. If you need to connect to a wider range of laptops without Thunderbolt, the 2big RAID's USB-C is more versatile. Check your computer's ports before deciding.
- Dock Convenience vs. Simplicity: The 2big Dock v2 replaces a separate dock and reduces cable clutter, but the 2big RAID is a simpler, more focused storage device.
- Budget vs. Features: The 2big RAID costs less, making it a better value if you don't need Thunderbolt 3 or dock ports. The 2big Dock v2 justifies its higher price with added performance and convenience. Set your budget and list must-have features first.
