Step-by-step setup for the SmallRig 4411 clamp matte box and VND kit: mount it cleanly on 67–82mm lenses, align the VND, and avoid the most common clamp mistakes.

Quick answer

Mount the SmallRig 4411 by clamping it directly to a 67–82mm lens, then set the VND before you tighten the three-point lock. The key is to align the clamp evenly and avoid overtightening, which can shift the matte box or bind the VND ring.

Why the clamp range matters before you start

The 4411 is designed for lenses with a front diameter between 67 and 82mm. If your lens is outside that range, the clamp will not seat securely, and no amount of tightening will fix it. Check the filter thread or front barrel diameter printed on the lens before mounting.

When to use the VND kit versus a plain matte box

The included VND kit adds adjustable neutral density, which is useful for keeping a wide aperture in bright conditions without swapping filters. If you mostly shoot in controlled light, you can leave the VND out and use the matte box for flare control alone. Just remember that the VND adds a small amount of thickness, so recheck clamp tension after installing it.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Check your lens diameter: Confirm the lens front is between 67 and 82mm. If it is smaller, use a step-up ring; if larger, the clamp will not fit. Measure the actual front diameter, not the filter thread size, if the lens has a stepped barrel.
  2. Slide the clamp onto the lens: With the matte box unlatched, slide the clamp over the lens front until it sits flush against the barrel. Do not force it. If it binds, loosen the clamp screw further before pushing.
  3. Center the matte box: Rotate the matte box so the top flag or filter slots are level and the opening is centered over the lens. Check from the front. A slightly off-center matte box can cause uneven vignetting with wide lenses.
  4. Install the VND filter: If using the VND kit, screw or slide the VND into the matte box according to the kit’s direction, then rotate the adjustment ring to its lightest setting before locking. Set the VND to minimum density before mounting so you can see through the viewfinder while aligning.
  5. Engage the three-point lock: Press the push rods on both sides of the clamp to lock the matte box. Tighten evenly—do not overcompress the lens barrel. The matte box should not rotate when you gently twist it; if it does, re-seat and lock again.
  6. Test the VND range: Rotate the VND through its full range and watch for any binding or slipping. It should move smoothly without shifting the matte box. If the VND binds, the clamp may be overtightened or the filter is not seated correctly.
